For the past two weeks the Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution has been presenting its case against Dr. Paul Awa related to his prescribing practices at J.W. Wellness Center in Tampa. Prosecutors intorduced evidence that clinic staff were fabricating medical records for patients and represented to physicians such as Dr. Awa that the records were legitimate. The clinic owners and staff plead guilty and were called as witnesses. They all testified Dr. Awa had no knowlegde of their criminal acts.
The case went to the jury yesterday at about 3:00 p.m. THe jury recessed without reaching a verdict at about 9:30 p.m on Friday. They are scheduled to return to their deliberations on Sunday.
